Turbine lube oil coolers are required in turbine systems where bearings, shafts, gears, seals, or hydraulic control components need continuous lubrication and temperature control. They are commonly used in steam turbines, gas turbines, hydro turbines, turbo-generators, turbine-driven compressors, turbine-driven pumps, and marine turbine systems.
In power plants, the lube oil cooler is especially important for steam turbine generator sets and hydro turbine generator units because these machines operate continuously under high speed and heavy load. The lubricating oil absorbs heat from journal bearings, thrust bearings, guide bearings, gearboxes, and other rotating parts. If the oil is not cooled properly, the oil temperature will rise, viscosity will drop, and the lubrication film may become too weak to protect the bearing surface.
Gas turbines also require lube oil coolers to control the temperature of oil used for bearings and accessory equipment. In hydro power stations, lube oil coolers are often used for thrust bearing oil cooling, guide bearing oil cooling, and governor or hydraulic oil cooling. In petrochemical plants and refineries, turbine-driven compressors and turbine-driven pumps also depend on oil coolers for stable long-term operation.
Simply speaking, any turbine system with high-speed rotating equipment and pressure lubrication normally requires a lube oil cooler. Its main purpose is to maintain stable oil temperature, protect bearings, reduce wear, prevent overheating, and support safe continuous operation.
